The Important Role of Your Birth Partner
When we think about preparing for birth, so much of the focus is naturally on the birthing woman — but what about the person beside her?
Your birth partner can play an incredibly important role during labour and birth. Whether they are your partner, friend, family member, doula or another support person, having someone you trust by your side can help you feel calm, supported and confident throughout the experience.
And the good news? They don’t need to be an expert in birth.
They simply need to know how to support you.
Your birth partner can be your calm
Labour can bring moments of excitement, uncertainty and intensity. Having someone beside you who understands how to stay calm and grounded can make a huge difference.
Your birth partner can use a calm voice, remind you to breathe, offer reassurance and help create a peaceful environment around you.
Sometimes, you don't need someone to say the perfect thing. You simply need to hear:
"You're doing so well."
"I'm right here."
"One breath at a time."
They can help you stay focused
During labour, your attention naturally turns inward as you focus on each contraction and the work your body is doing.
This is where your birth partner can become your extra set of eyes and ears.
They can remind you of the techniques you've practised, help you change positions, offer water, provide massage or simply hold your hand.
The goal isn't to take over — it's to support you in whatever way feels right in that moment.
They can provide physical comfort
Your birth partner can be a wonderful source of hands-on support.
Depending on what feels comfortable for you, they might provide:
Massage
Hip squeezes or counter-pressure
Support with different positions
A hand to hold
Help getting comfortable
Encouragement to move around
Sometimes the smallest physical gesture can provide a huge amount of comfort.
They can help advocate for you
One of the most valuable things a birth partner can do is help you feel heard.
Before birth, talk together about your preferences, what is important to you and how you'd like your birth partner to support you.
During labour, they can help communicate your wishes, ask questions and make sure you have the opportunity to understand your options.
This doesn't mean they need to make decisions for you. Instead, they can help create space for you to ask questions and make informed choices.
Preparation makes a difference
One of the best things you can do is prepare your birth partner before labour begins.
Don't assume they'll automatically know what you need. Talk about what support might look like for you and practise some of the techniques together.
This could include breathing, relaxation, massage, positions, affirmations and understanding your birth preferences.
The more familiar they are with these tools, the more confident they may feel when the big day arrives.
And remember... every labour is different
Perhaps the biggest birth partner tip of all is to stay flexible.
What sounds wonderful during pregnancy might not feel right during labour — and that's completely okay. Your birth partner's role isn't to follow a script perfectly. It's to listen, observe, adapt and support you.
Sometimes you'll want massage.
Sometimes you'll want space.
Sometimes you'll want them talking to you.
Sometimes you'll want complete silence!
The best birth partners follow your cues.
You don't have to prepare for birth alone
Birth is your experience, but preparing together can help you and your birth partner feel more confident going into it.
